Media motivates! Using the Internet, apps & co. in English lessons
(Louise Carleton-Gertsch)
09:30 – 11:00
Today we have a wealth of exciting new possibilities to make learning English more interesting, authentic and rewarding, both for pupils and teachers. Yet it is often difficult to find suitable resources due to the overwhelming number of websites, youtube videos and apps available. This talk, including practical tips and examples, will focus on how digital media and tools can be used alongside traditional ones to enhance the learning experience, no matter how “tech-savvy” you are.
About Louise: I was born and bred in the UK and studied at Cambridge
University, but have now lived in Germany for over 20 years. For most of this time I’ve worked in education, writing course books and materials (primarily for Klett), consulting and speaking at conferences and in schools. In addition to this, I’m active in the field of new media for children, consulting on projects and undertaking speaking engagements. It’s always very rewarding when I get to work on projects that combine these two areas!

40 things to do with a text
(Anthony Gaughan)
11:15 – 13:15
A lot of what we do in the language classroom somehow involves texts – but how much do we really exploit them? Let me share at least 40 ways to make use of texts that are simple to use, require minimal preparation, and are highly effective. In this session, we will look at ways of using texts for reading and listening comprehension, as starting points for student talk and writing, and also as the basis for language study.
About Anthony: Anthony has been an ELT professional since 1995. He is a Celta Main Course Tutor and Assessor, a Delta M2 tutor, works as an online tutor for the Trinity DipTESOL, and is a former Head of teacher-training at the Hamburg School of English (DE634). Anthony is also a Cambridge English speaking examiner for BEC Vantage as well as Cambridge First and Advanced exams (DE007).
He is interested in taking minimalist approaches to teaching and teacher-training and currently serves on the IATEFL Membership and Marketing Committee.

Invigilator Training
(Andreas Grundtvig and Valerie Alt)
14:15 – 16:45
If you would like to find out what it takes to become an Invigilator for the Cambridge Exams Centre in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, Andreas and Valerie will show you the ropes. By talking you through the process of an exam day we’ll share our recipe for success, that continually earns us the highest marks in inspections.
About Andreas and Valerie: Andreas is Centre Manager and Valerie is Invigilation Team Leader, and together with their friend and colleague Wilton Mills, Team Leader for Speaking Examiners, they administer exams for the Cambridge Exams Centre in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein (DE007). Working together for over ten years, they deliver exams at the Centre in Hamburg as well as in schools from Flensburg and Heide to Hamburg, Kiel and Lübeck. Andreas and Wilton are also founder members of Teachers 4 Schools: https://andralma.wordpress.com
